Spider of Unusual Size

Let me begin with this. Spiders do not ordinarily affect me. However......

Sunday afternoon I went to get Saturday's mail. I noticed a V-E-R-Y large spider on the porch. Ordinarily I would simply walk by a spider and silently thank if for taking care of the other bugs. Not this day. I dared to get close enough to take a photo (which soooo does not do it justice) and text it to Jim. Meanwhile I stared at it from a safe distance while trying to examine it.

As I walk to the mailbox this is what is going through my head.

Is that an egg sack? If I step on it will a million little babies come running out at me? This happened to my aunt and she got a ton of little spider bites. Is that it's body? Will it crunch if I squish it? Will I feel it through the sole of my shoe? Will it really die??

At this point I remember that I have some spider killer in the garage with an 18" hose attached. I promptly being spraying this spider with surely 100x a lethal dose. Nada. It sat there and then....... it flipped onto its back and began sliding towards my front door. Yes, while on its back - which freaked me out and then began hoisting itself up to the ceiling of my porch. I ran inside.

From the safety of the inside of my home I watched this spider hang and presumably writhe in pain tyring to not die. For over 10 minutes I watched this spider hang there. Finally, thinking about the fact I could never go out my front door again to meet UPS, FedEx, or visitors with this spider there I did the only thing any normal person would do. I went and got my neighbor and his wife to take care of the problem.

I described the spider as humongous and his wife knew exactly what I was talking about. Apparently this spider eats bees. For that I will love it .... but not on my front porch or, quite frankly, from anywhere that I can see it. My wonderful neighbor came and rescued the spider, and me, washed off the killing agent and released him into his yard. God bless wonderful neighbors!
